Wanted: Tuskegee’s First Soccer Coaches to Build HBCU Dynasty

By: Ahmad Smith | Ahmad’s Goal Line Sports Columnist

Tuskegee University is known for many things: innovation, civil rights leadership, and of course, the legendary Tuskegee Airmen.

As 2026 begins, there’s another reason to keep an eye on the university: the launch of new men’s and women’s soccer programs within its Department of Athletics.

The recent job postings for head coaches mark an exciting development — not only for Tuskegee but also for HBCU soccer nationwide; especially, during a World Cup year taking place here in the United States.

Decades ago, a surge in soccer at HBCUs seemed inevitable thanks to powerhouses like Howard University in the 1970s and 1980s, along with Alabama A&M’s national championship team. Tuskegee’s move could signal a welcome revival of that legacy.

Historically, HBCUs have invested less in soccer compared to other collegiate sports, but Tuskegee appears ready to challenge that trend. Out of more than 100 HBCUs across the country, fewer than half offer both men’s and women’s soccer.  Many of those programs are not full-time. Tuskegee, however, plans to hire two full-time head coaches, one for each program, which sets a promising foundation.

When asked for comment about the new positions, university officials declined to respond. However, according to the listings, the goal is to fill the roles by March 2, 2026. Current openings include Men’s Head Soccer Coach, Women’s Head Soccer Coach, and Assistant Soccer Coach.

The university seeks candidates experienced in building soccer culture, developing competitive programs, and recruiting and training student-athletes to perform at advanced levels.

Could you be the one to make history as the first head coach of Tuskegee’s men’s or women’s soccer team?

Tell me what you think. Leave comments and sports tips in the comment section.
