M is for Mindset: The Money Shift That Changes Everything
Let’s get real for a second before we even think about budgets or debt.
You know that feeling when you get a email from your bank about your balance and your stomach drops? Or when you’re standing at checkout and suddenly doing mental math while people wait behind you?
Yeah. That.
Here’s what I’ve learned over the years:
Most people don’t actually have a money problem. They have a head gameproblem.
I know that sounds like something from a motivational poster. But stick with me. Having the right Mindset is truly the number one way to change anything. That’s why it is the first thing that you must adjust to reach ANY goal.
Why Mindset Comes First
Mindset is the “M” in WHY GOALS MATTER because it’s where everything starts. You can have the fanciest budget spreadsheet in the world, but if you’re running it on fear and avoidance? It won’t work.
Here’s the thing: I’ve seen people making serious money who are still stressed about finances. Like, can’t sleep-at-night stressed.
Why? Because how you think about money shapes what you do with it.
If the voice in your head keeps saying:
• “I’m terrible with money”
• “I’ll never get ahead”
• “What’s the point of even trying?”
Then guess what? Your actions follow that script—even when you’re making more money.
The Avoidance Game
Can we talk about bank account avoidance for a sec? I used to be that person.
I’ve watched brilliant, capable people refuse to open their banking app for weeks. They’ll just… not look. Cross their fingers. Hope it works out.
That’s not peace. That’s just stress with its eyes closed.
The One Shift That Actually Helps
Financial peace doesn’t come from having more money in the bank. It starts way simpler than that:
“I’m going to look at my finances without beating myself up about it.”
That’s literally it. No perfection. No shame spiral.
When you can move from:
• “I’m so far behind” → “Okay, I see where I am”
• “I can’t handle this” → “I can figure this out”
• “I screwed everything up” → “I’m making adjustments”
That’s when the shift begins.
Try This, This Week
This week, challenge yourself to pause before making any purchase—whether it’s grabbing a coffee, shopping online, or picking up items at Walmart. Take just five seconds and ask yourself: “Is this bringing me closer to feeling good about my money… or am I just trying to feel better right now?”
Remember, the goal isn’t to judge yourself. Just notice. Because once you start noticing, you begin to choose more intentionally. That’s where true power over your finances begins.
Why This Actually Matters
Money stress doesn’t just mess with your bank account. It messes with your sleep, your mood, your health. But when you change how you think about money, it stops being this scary monster and becomes what it is a tool you can learn to use.
Tools aren’t meant to scare you. They’re meant to help you build something.
Next week, we’ll keep building together one piece at a time. Because this isn’t about getting it perfect. It’s about getting intentional.
Come back next week. Share this with someone who needs it. And let’s start the shift.
And remember, Be the reason that someone smiles today. You be the reason that someone smiles today.

Great article, Ms. Brown! It was the: “That’s just stress with its eyes closed for me.” Been there! 🤦🏽♂️
