Walking In The Word With Clint

Summertime and Family

By Pastor Clint Perkins

Summer in Mississippi brings more than hot weather. It brings picnics, family reunions, church revivals and gatherings that create memories for generations. Across the Deep South, these traditions remain an important part of family life. They bring people together to laugh, reconnect and sometimes work through old disagreements.

Movies by Tyler Perry often shine a light on the humor and drama that can happen at family gatherings. Some moments are funny, some are painfully true and some can be difficult to accept. Still, family should be a place where love and forgiveness have room to grow.

The Apostle Paul encouraged believers in Ephesians 4:32 to “be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Imagine how much better our homes, churches and communities would be if every family lived by those words.

As summer activities begin, make kindness a priority wherever you gather. Whether you attend a reunion, revival or backyard cookout, choose patience, understanding and grace. When someone makes a mistake or says the wrong thing, remember how much we all appreciate forgiveness when we need it ourselves.

First Peter 4:8 reminds us that “love covers a multitude of sins.” Genuine love looks beyond faults and seeks the best for others. That kind of love helps families stay connected even when personalities clash.

Every family has that relative who tends to stir up confusion or create tension. Instead of allowing one person to ruin the atmosphere, respond with wisdom and love. Forgive them, set healthy expectations and encourage respect for everyone attending. If they cannot honor those boundaries, sometimes the best expression of love is loving them from a distance. That is tough love, but it can protect the peace of the entire gathering.

This summer, let’s be intentional about strengthening family relationships and creating positive memories together. A little kindness, forgiveness and understanding can turn an ordinary gathering into something truly special.
