What is the Individual Education Program (IEP)?
By Shellena L.

In Mississippi, public schools provide Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
These programs ensure that eligible students ages 3 to 20 receive specialized instruction and support services through the public school system.
IEPs are typically implemented through local school districts and overseen by the Mississippi Department of Education, specifically the Mississippi Department of Education Office of Special Education, which ensures schools follow federal and state special education laws.
An IEP is a legally binding document created for students who have been diagnosed with a qualifying disability.
The plan is developed with input from parents, educators, and specialists and outlines the individualized services a student needs to succeed in school.
Through an IEP, school districts must provide a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) tailored to the student’s needs. Services may support students with disabilities such as autism, developmental delays, hearing impairments, or emotional disabilities.
Parents who believe their child may need special education services can request an evaluation from their local school district. If the student qualifies, the school team works with the family to develop the IEP and determine the appropriate services.
In addition to traditional school-based services, Mississippi also offers families another option through the Equal Opportunity for Students with Special Needs Program, an Education Scholarship Account (ESA) program. This initiative allows eligible students who have had an active IEP within the past three years to access scholarship funds that can be used for approved educational services.
Overall, IEPs serve as an important tool to ensure that students with disabilities receive individualized support, educational access, and legal protections within the school system.
