MENDENHALL — Two people are dead and a suspect is in custody following a Wednesday afternoon standoff in Simpson County that left a deputy wounded, according to Sheriff Paul Mullins.
“Scene is secure and being processed at this time. Two deceased and the suspect is in custody,” Mullins told The People’s Paper MS.
The incident began when deputies responded to a welfare concern at a residence on W.L. Blair Circle in Mendenhall.
According to Mullins, deputies arrived to find the front door open when a person inside the residence opened fire. During the encounter, a Simpson County deputy was shot in the foot.
Earlier Wednesday, Mullins confirmed the deputy’s injury to The People’s Paper MS, saying, “He did, but he’s fine.”
The shooting prompted a large law enforcement response as authorities worked to contain the situation. Multiple agencies responded to the scene, and residents in the area were urged to avoid the neighborhood while officers secured the area.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the two deceased individuals, the suspect in custody, or additional details regarding the circumstances that led to the shooting.
It is also unclear at this time whether the deceased were discovered before or after deputies arrived at the residence.
With the scene now secured, investigators are processing evidence and continuing their investigation.
Officials have not announced potential charges or released further information about the suspect.
This is a developing story. The People’s Paper MS will provide updates as additional information becomes available.
