As we begin Black History Month, I thought it would be fitting to highlight a Black soccer history story in Mississippi each week throughout the month. And who better to kick things off than THEE Jackson State University Women’s Soccer Team?
Jackson State University Women’s Soccer traces its origins back to the 1990s, when the team played exhibition games at a local club known as the Central Jackson Soccer Organization (CJSO) at Callaway High School.
Since 2003, Jackson State Women’s Soccer has established itself as one of the most successful programs in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The team currently holds the second most SWAC championships since 2003 and has been crowned Regular Season SWAC Champions twice since 2022.
The program boasts a diverse roster of student athletes from across the United States and around the world, all of whom have chosen to call the campus on J. R. Lynch Street in Jackson, Mississippi home while pursuing their academic and athletic goals.
The current roster includes young women from Germany, Canada, California, Georgia, and several homegrown talents from Mississippi. The program’s impact extends beyond the pitch, with notable alumni including social media influencer Brittany Renner.
The Lady Tigers are currently led by head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites, with assistance from Coach Taylor Leddy, continuing a legacy of excellence both on and off the field.
