When the Shift Changes What Flows From Us
By Drs. James and Natasha King
Last month, a new season began, and with it came an incredible shift.
Sometimes a shift is loud. We recognize it immediately because something changes around us. Other times, the most significant shifts happen quietly within us. Our perspective changes, our priorities become clearer, or our capacity expands. We begin to see differently, respond differently, and even desire different things.
There are also moments when we realize that the shift was not the destination.
It was preparation for the overflow.
There is a beautiful marble fountain in our area that has become a picture in our minds of what happens when something within us begins to overflow. The fountain is a tiered structure, beautifully designed with ornate horses and large, bowl-like structures that serve as foundations for holding the water. Water flows from one level to the next, filling each basin until it reaches its capacity.
The fountain doesn’t stop there. The water that overflows is collected and pumped back to the top, beginning the process again. The fountain continues to flow because what is received is not only retained. It is received, filled, and released.
That is what this month feels like.
From Shift to Overflow
Last month was about the shift. This month is about what happens because of the shift.
There are seasons when God is doing something in us before He begins doing something through us. We’ve found that He changes our perspective before He changes our circumstances, He works on our character before expanding our capacity, and He teaches us how to receive before asking us to release.
In relationships, a distinction should be made. The shift prepares the vessel, and the overflow reveals the capacity that was created.
Those who are intentionally growing may have felt something change recently. A few things are likely present: You have become more aware of how you communicate, you are recognizing patterns that no longer serve your relationship, or you have become more intentional about creating peace in your home, protecting your connection, or making room for one another again.
You may not have all the answers yet, but you can feel that something is different, and that matters.
What Is Filling You?
A fountain can only overflow with what it contains. That raises an important question for every relationship:
What are we allowing to fill us?
If we are constantly filled with frustration, resentment, comparison, disappointment, or fear, eventually those things will overflow into our relationships.
But when we allow ourselves to be filled with God’s love, His presence, His wisdom, His grace, and His peace, something different begins to happen.
The overflow changes.
As we move into this new month, the invitation is to look within.
What has the shift produced in you?
What are you carrying into your relationships?
And ultimately, what is being released from you because of what has been filling you?
The shift may have been quiet, and the preparation may have happened where no one else could see it. However, when something has truly changed within us, eventually, there is evidence.
What is within us will find a way to flow through us, and that is where the real beauty of overflow begins.
