Stroke Series | Part VI: Secret Support

by K. Monroe Carter/Permission Granted by Katina Rankin

There’s a strange thing about people — they’ll whisper “I’m with you” behind closed doors but vanish when it’s time to stand beside you in the light. They’ll send a text, an emoji, or a heart — but never a public word. It’s the quiet corner of “amen” that thrives in secrecy.

But here’s the truth: what’s done in the dark always comes to the light. And sometimes, that light exposes who truly stood beside you and who merely stood near you for the comfort of your shadow while trying to heal from your stroke.

People love to advise silence. “Write it in a diary.” “Don’t put it on social media.” “Shhh — not everything needs to be said.” But tell me — why should I muzzle my truth when I’ve spent more than 30 years amplifying everyone else’s? I’ve told the world about others’ triumphs, tragedies, and turning points on the news. Isn’t it only fair — only real — that I tell mine?

Would you rather I be a plaster saint, polished and perfect, pretending that life never cracked me open? Or would you rather the unfiltered truth — that even those who say they “support” you often do it only in secret?

See, I’ve learned that real support isn’t whispered. It’s not hidden in private messages or quiet nods. It shows up. It stands tall. It risks being seen.

So, to those who prefer my silence — know this: my voice isn’t rebellion; it’s release. My transparency isn’t attention-seeking; it’s testimony. And my truth, no matter how uncomfortable, will always have a mic and a pen — because it’s mine to tell. I’m trying to heal — not bleed for other people’s comfort.  That healing is through release without hypocrisy.

🛑 Note: I would rather sleep and rest than pen a page, but GOD says write. I must be obedient even if I’m weary.

Because obedience isn’t always convenient — it’s commanded. And when God gives you words, silence becomes disobedience. So even tired, I write. Even weary, I witness. Because someone’s healing is hidden in my honesty.🛑
