Mississippi families are being squeezed from every direction. Grocery bills are high. Utility bills are high.
Rural water systems are struggling. Small towns are fighting to maintain aging infrastructure. Too many families are forced to decide which essential bill gets paid first.
That is why I am proposing the SNAP H2O Initiative.
The idea is simple: allow eligible Mississippi families to use their existing SNAP benefits to help pay their water bills.
No new benefit. No new bureaucracy, if we can avoid it. Just a better option for families using resources that already exist.
Our preliminary Mississippi model shows the potential. If roughly 175,900 SNAP households directed just $25 per month toward water bills, that could represent more than $52 million annually in payments to Mississippi water providers. At $50 per month, the potential exceeds $105 million. At $75 per month, it approaches $158 million.
Those are estimates, not guarantees. But they show why this idea deserves serious attention.
This is about more than money. It is about keeping water flowing, reducing shutoffs and reconnection fees, strengthening local utilities and giving families greater control over their household decisions.
Mississippi cannot simply flip a switch tomorrow. But we can lead.
I am asking our governor, MDHS, utilities, lawmakers, community leaders and citizens to come together, build the plan and take Mississippi’s water affordability challenge to Washington.
We need a working group and the courage to push for change.
Water is essential. Access should be too.
Let’s make SNAP H2O a Mississippi solution that America can follow.
