MENDENHALL, Miss. — Investigators are searching for answers after officers found a dead man locked inside the trunk of a running car early Tuesday morning.
A passerby spotted the suspicious vehicle parked on Goshen Road near Highway 541 North around 6:40 a.m. and called dispatch, according to Sheriff Mullins of the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office. Because county deputies were tied up on another call, officers from the nearby Magee Police Department rushed to the scene to help.
When officers arrived, they found the car’s engine still running. They noticed what looked like blood near the trunk and, fearing someone inside was in immediate danger, forced it open. Inside, they discovered the body of an unidentified man.
Simpson County deputies and investigators took over the scene shortly after. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Scene Unit is now assisting with the case.
Authorities are withholding the man’s identity until they can officially identify him and notify his family.
Law enforcement officials urge anyone who drove near Highway 541 North and Goshen Road around 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, or anyone who saw anything unusual, to call the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office at 601-847-2921, the Magee Police Department at 601-849-2366, or Mississippi Crime Stoppers at 1-888-827-4637.
