COZARTIP 101: Protect Your Edges

By Tony Cozart | The Godfather of Haircare

Let’s talk about a touchy subject. I know how much women of color love sleek edges, but we need to address the hidden damage.

Slicking down your hair with harsh edge controls and gels can cause temporary or permanent damage to your hair and scalp. Most of these products rely on heavy chemicals and wax. These ingredients temporarily alter your hair’s natural composition and clog your follicles, which triggers breakage and thinning around your hairline.

You can easily prevent hair loss by switching to alcohol-free and wax-free products. Wash your hair with a hydrating shampoo, and always follow up with a moisturizing conditioner.

Steer clear of protein-based shampoos and conditioners for now. While protein strengthens hair, it also hardens your strands when mixed with the alcohol and wax found in styling gels.

Finally, wash or swap out your headwear. A dirty bonnet or scarf traps product buildup, debris, pollution, bacteria, and fungus from the previous day. Reusing it rubs those contaminants back into your scalp, leading to unpleasant odors and buildup.

Take care of your scalp, and your edges will thank you.
