Proper Lip Care

By Sheila Leftridge

Proper lip care is essential because lip skin is extremely thin, lacks natural oil glands, and contains no melanin. This makes lips highly vulnerable to dryness, environmental damage, and even skin cancer. A consistent routine helps prevent painful chapping and premature aging.

Proper care also helps prevent painful cracking, lowers the risk of infections, and protects against sun damage.

Our lips are delicate and prone to dryness, cracking, and chapping—especially during harsh weather conditions. Neglecting lip care can lead to discomfort and even pain. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the importance of lip care and the common problems that can arise.

Additionally, factors such as sun exposure, cold weather, dehydration, and certain medications can further worsen lip problems. Common issues include dryness, chapping, cracking, and even cold sores. These conditions can be uncomfortable and may affect overall appearance.

A solid lip care routine keeps lips hydrated, smooth, and protected. A simple, highly effective regimen includes three steps: gentle exfoliation, deep hydration with an emollient balm, and daily sun protection.

Key Benefits of Lip Care

Proper lip care is important for keeping lips hydrated and preventing flaking, bleeding, and cracking. When choosing a lip balm or gloss, ensure it contains SPF.

Because lip skin is thin, it is highly susceptible to sunburn and long-term sun damage, which can increase the risk of skin cancer. Lips are also one of the first areas to show volume loss and fine lines. Products with antioxidants and peptides can help maintain plump, youthful-looking lips.

Severely cracked or bleeding lips can easily become infected due to constant exposure to food and bacteria.

Essential Lip Care Steps

  • Keep lips hydrated by applying a deeply nourishing lip balm or oil.
  • Always use an SPF lip product during the day to protect against harmful UV rays. SPF 30 or higher is recommended, with reapplication every two hours when outdoors.
  • Exfoliate gently once a week using a mild scrub or chemical exfoliant to remove dead skin without irritation.
  • At night, apply a rich lip mask or peptide-based cream to support overnight repair and plumpness.
  • You may also use petroleum jelly or a thick ointment before bed to lock in moisture.
  • Drink plenty of water to support hydration from within.

When my lips become chapped, it is usually a sign that I am dehydrated.

Product Spotlight

Recently, I visited my local Dollar Tree and tried “Beauty Impressions,” often marketed as “Kissy Lips,” a viral budget-friendly lip care brand trending on TikTok. It is typically sold for $1.25 and often resold online due to high demand.

These products are known for surprisingly high-quality ingredients, including amino acids (the building blocks of proteins), squalane (a lightweight moisturizing oil that mimics the skin’s natural sebum), and nourishing oils.

I tried a 2-in-1 lip mask and scrub duo and chose the collagen formula, which is designed to support fuller, smoother-looking lips.

I also picked up the raspberry swirl lip balm with squalane and amino acids, which provides long-lasting hydration. In addition, I purchased a roll-on lip oil with a vitamin C brightening formula. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that may help reduce the appearance of discoloration.

Definitely worth a try.

Habits to Avoid

Try to avoid constantly licking your lips. Saliva contains digestive enzymes that strip away natural moisture, leaving lips even drier.

Avoid picking or peeling cracked or dry lips, as this can damage the skin barrier, cause bleeding, slow healing, and lead to scarring.

Healthy lips create a smooth, beautiful canvas for lipstick, gloss, or balm—soft, kissable, and well cared for.
