Never Stop Growing Together

Stronger Together with James & Natasha King

There is a story in Morgan Housel’s The Psychology of Money that has stayed with us.

Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger had a close friend and fellow investor named Rick Guerin. Rick was brilliant. He understood markets, spotted opportunities and moved in the same circles as two of the greatest investors in history.

When the market turned, however, Rick was not in a position to wait it out. He had borrowed money to fund his investments, and when prices dropped, his lenders came calling. He was forced to sell his Berkshire Hathaway shares to Buffett simply to cover his debts.

Rick did not lose because he lacked intelligence. He lost because he lacked the patience to build for the long term.

We often think about that story when we talk about marriage.

Some couples enter a relationship with tremendous love, real chemistry and the best intentions. Over time, the connection subtly erodes because they stop building. They reach a comfortable place and assume the work is finished. What they lose is the staying power that comes from continuing to grow.

Healthy marriages do not coast. They compound.

Just as wise investing means continuing to learn, adjust and stay the course through difficult seasons, a healthy marriage requires choosing, again and again, to become better together. It means having conversations that go deeper than the surface. It means reading together, praying together, seeking wise counsel, attending workshops and asking the harder questions. It means staying curious about the person sitting across from you because there is always another level of knowing someone.

The strongest couples we have observed are not those who avoided every difficult season. They are the ones who kept growing through them. Their marriages did not last by accident. They endured because both people remained teachable.

This week, identify one way to invest in your growth as a couple. Start the conversation you have been putting off. Learn something new together. Set a goal that belongs to both of you.

The return on that kind of investment does not always appear immediately. But over time, it builds something that cannot easily be shaken.

A lasting marriage is built by two people who never stop becoming.
