The Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus says it spent the past year pushing major policy changes in education, health care, voting rights, criminal justice and economic support for working families.

The caucus released a summary Friday of its 2025-26 work, saying it helped increase teacher pay, opposed school choice legislation, advanced Black maternal health initiatives and supported efforts to restore voting rights. The group also said it advocated for child care funding and drew attention to conditions at the Mississippi State Penitentiary.

Chairman Kabir Karriem said the caucus remains committed to “delivering real results” for Mississippians. He said the group’s work centers on equity, accountability and opportunity.

The caucus also said it held multiple town halls, legislative hearings and statewide events over the past year to keep community voices involved in policymaking. Those events took place in cities including Gulfport, Greenwood, Holly Springs, Laurel, Brookhaven, Gloster, Biloxi and Jackson.

The caucus’s year-end summary also highlighted work on redistricting, social safety nets, environmental justice, HBCU support and criminal legal reform. The group said its work continues as it pushes policies aimed at strengthening families and communities across Mississippi.
