MAGEE, Miss. — A 14 year old runaway from Texas was safely recovered Tuesday morning after Magee police encountered her walking along U.S. Highway 49 South.
According to the Magee Police Department, officers responded around 9 a.m. April 21, 2026, to a reported disturbance near the Pure Gas station on Highway 49 South. By the time officers arrived, the individuals involved had already left the scene.
As officers cleared the call, they noticed a young female walking northbound along the highway carrying a backpack. Officers stopped to check on her welfare and determined she was a juvenile.
During the investigation, officers learned the girl had run away from her home in Quitman, Texas. Police said she had taken a diesel truck and was traveling to Florida to meet someone she met online.
Authorities said the situation took an unexpected turn when the teen stopped for fuel in Magee and accidentally put gasoline into the diesel truck, causing it to break down. That mechanical issue ultimately led to officers locating her safely.
“This situation could have ended very differently,” said Chief Denis J. Borges. “We are thankful our officers were in the right place at the right time to help bring it to a safe outcome.”
Police said the case serves as a reminder to parents and guardians about the risks associated with online communication and the importance of monitoring children’s activity.
Officials noted that situations like this can develop quickly and become dangerous without warning.
The juvenile is now safe, and appropriate steps are being taken to reunite her with her family.
