The city of Magee is collecting donations for the Purvis relief project to help families recover after the recent tornado that struck the Purvis area.

Residents can drop off items at City Hall now until May 22nd. City officials are seeking cleaning supplies, hygiene items, baby supplies, food and drinks to help meet immediate needs.

Requested items include Lysol wipes, Pine-Sol, bleach, contractor bags and paper towels. The city is also asking for individually wrapped toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, body wash, washcloths and feminine hygiene products.

For families with small children, officials are requesting diapers, wipes and bottles. They are also collecting nonperishable food, water and electrolyte drinks.

The effort is meant to bring the community together and help people recovering after the storm.

The tornado that struck Purvis was part of a severe weather outbreak that damaged homes across Mississippi. Early reports from weather and news outlets said the National Weather Service gave the Purvis tornado a preliminary EF-2 rating, and damage in Lamar County was significant.
