Residents who need to renew a driver’s license, obtain a permit or take a driver’s permit test will soon have a more convenient option without leaving Magee.
The Magee Chamber of Commerce will host the Mississippi Highway Patrol Mobile Driver Services Station on Monday, Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Magee Chamber of Commerce, 117 First Ave. SW.
The event marks the first time the Chamber has sponsored the mobile station, an effort leaders hope will make essential driver services more accessible for local residents.
“We’re excited to host the MHP mobile station for the first time,” said Susan Walker of the Magee Chamber of Commerce. “One of the most common questions we receive at the Chamber office is where people can go to renew their driver’s licenses. Community members are always looking for an easier option.”
Walker said the idea came directly from a local resident.
“One day a community member stopped by and asked if we would be willing to call and see if the mobile unit could come to Magee,” she said. “The unit travels to communities across Mississippi. They simply need a local sponsor to request a visit.”
After discussing the opportunity, the Chamber’s Board of Directors voted to sponsor the mobile station as a community service.
“Our tagline is ‘For a Better Community,’ and we believe bringing this service to Magee is one way to live out that mission,” Walker said.
The mobile station operates much like a traditional Mississippi Driver Service Bureau office. Two service stations will be available, and up to four applicants can take permit tests at the same time. Standard Mississippi driver’s license and permit fees will still apply.
Walker said the convenience is especially important for students, parents and working adults.
“Instead of people traveling outside of Magee to take a licensing test, leaving school early or taking time off work just to renew a license, we’re bringing the service to them,” she said. “It’s about making these services easier to access.”
If the event receives strong community support, the Chamber hopes to make it a recurring service.
“If this event goes well, we would love to sponsor the mobile station once each quarter,” Walker said.
Residents planning to attend are encouraged to arrive prepared with any required documentation and payment for applicable licensing fees.
