First, it’s important to understand the difference between a natural hair care stylist and a cosmetologist.
A natural hair care stylist is not trained to use chemical services or cut hair. Instead, they specialize in styling healthy, chemical free hair.
A cosmetologist is trained in chemical services, haircutting and the science of hair. Cosmetology is defined as the art and science of hair, skin and nails.
When choosing a hair care stylist, there are several things you should consider, especially if you found the stylist through social media, which has become a popular way to discover beauty professionals.
One way to determine whether a stylist may be a good fit is to look at the work they share. Do they style clients of different age groups, hair textures and ethnic backgrounds? A diverse portfolio is often a sign of versatility and experience.
You should also ask how many years of experience the stylist has as a licensed beauty professional.
If a stylist is not well versed in working with a variety of hair types and client needs, it may be a sign that they are not the best fit for you.
Another important factor is the consultation process. A well trained stylist will always conduct a consultation before committing to a service. A consultation allows the stylist to evaluate your hair, discuss your goals and recommend the best approach for achieving healthy results.
Stylists who do not require a consultation may present a higher risk because they are making decisions without first assessing your hair’s condition.
Choosing the right stylist is about more than finding someone who creates beautiful styles. It’s about finding a licensed professional with the knowledge, experience and commitment to help you maintain healthy hair.
