Global Joy in Challenging Times

By Akeem Tolson

For decades, the grand tour was a narrative that did not quite include us.

But look at us now. We are packing our bags and claiming our space in streets our ancestors only dreamed of.

International travel is an act of claiming global citizenship, but in 2026, that citizenship comes with a need for a new level of travel intelligence.

Right now, we are moving through a world with shifting lines. With the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the U.S. State Department has issued a Worldwide Caution. This is not meant to ground us. It is meant to guide us. It is a reminder that as American travelers, and specifically as Black travelers who often stand out, we must move with intention.

The Digital Safety Net: STEP

This is why the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, or STEP, is your best friend. In a world where airspace can close or security alerts can change in an hour, STEP is your direct line to the U.S. Embassy. It is a free service that helps ensure the government knows where you are if things go sideways. If there is a sudden escalation or a need for emergency assistance, you want to be on that list.

The Financial Safety Net: Travel Insurance

If there is one thing I need you to hear, it is this: If you cannot afford travel insurance, you cannot afford the trip.

In these challenging times, a standard policy might not be enough. With global conflicts creating uncertainty, you should consider Cancel For Any Reason, or CFAR, coverage.

Why? Standard insurance policies often exclude losses related to war or civil unrest. CFAR coverage can provide added flexibility, allowing travelers to cancel a trip for reasons that may not be covered under traditional plans and helping protect their investment.

Traveling With a Conscience

We are guests in every country we visit. Ethical travel means ensuring our presence benefits the local community. It means remembering that the people we meet are not props for our social media feeds. We are ambassadors of our culture, so let us leave a trail of respect and economic support behind us.

The 2026 Safety Check

• Monitor the vibe. Use hashtags such as #TravelingWhileBlack to see how fellow travelers are experiencing a destination in real time.

• Check advisories. Before booking, visit travel.state.gov for the latest updates and travel guidance that may affect your destination.

• Stay flexible. Keep a buffer fund and a backup plan. In 2026, flexibility is the ultimate luxury.

The world is our heritage, family. We have the courage to explore, but we must back that courage with wisdom. Register with STEP, secure the right travel insurance and move with the confidence that comes from being prepared for whatever the horizon holds.
