By The Peoples Paper MS Staff

JACKSON, Miss. — A former Simpson County sheriff’s deputy will be sentenced this week in federal court after pleading guilty to using excessive force against a handcuffed arrestee, according to court records and Justice Department statements.

Adrian Durr, 43, of Magee, admitted in January to one count of deprivation of civil rights under color of law stemming from a February 2024 incident in the Simpson County Jail booking area.

Prosecutors said Durr struck the arrestee with the hard handle of a Taser and kicked him in the head while the man was handcuffed to a bench and shackled at the ankles.

The case will be heard by U.S. District Court Judge Henry Wingate in Jackson, with sentencing scheduled for Thursday, according to federal court filings.

Durr faces up to 10 years in prison, the statutory maximum for the charge.

The Justice Department indicted Durr in October 2024. He later changed his plea to guilty.
