A former Mississippi State University linebacker is turning his athletic experience into a message of resilience and self-determination with the release of his new book, Control Your Destiny. H. DeWayne King, who played football at MSU and has remained deeply connected to the athletic community, recently sat down for an interview to discuss the inspiration behind his work and its message for today’s youth.
King explained that Control Your Destiny is designed to reach student-athletes facing the pressures of academic performance, athletic competition, and personal growth. Drawing on his years on the field and in leadership roles, he emphasized that success is not just about natural talent, but about mindset, accountability, and perseverance.
“Student-athletes have unique challenges,” King said during the interview. “If you want to control your future, you have to take charge of your decisions on the field, in the classroom, and in life.”
The book blends personal stories, practical advice, and motivational insight to help readers; especially, young people and those in competitive environments develop habits and confidence that extend beyond sports. King said that writing the book was a way to give back to the community that supported him throughout his athletic career.
Control Your Destiny underscores themes of self-belief, the importance of mentorship, and the idea that obstacles can be transformed into opportunities when met with preparation and purpose. King stressed that while athletic achievement can open doors, lasting success requires discipline and intentional choices.
Educators and youth mentors have responded positively to the book, noting that its message aligns with the values many schools and athletic programs strive to teach: accountability, resilience, and leadership.
King’s interview also touched on his work with young athletes off the field, including speaking engagements, mentorship programs, and community events focused on character development. While he acknowledged the wins and losses that marked his playing days, he said the most important lessons came in the form of how to respond to adversity and how to support others in pursuit of their goals.
