3 Basics of Healthy Hair and Scalp Care

By Tony Cozart | The Godfather of Hair

The hair and scalp have three basic needs, regardless of race, nationality or ethnic group: cleansing, balancing and hydration.

First: Cleansing

Let’s start with cleansing.

The purpose of cleansing is to remove dirt, debris, bacteria, excess oils and environmental pollutants from the hair and scalp. Proper cleansing helps create a clean canvas for the next step: balancing the hair and scalp.

Second: Balancing

Balancing the hair and scalp is very important, and it has a straightforward approach.

Whether you have a dry scalp, oily scalp, dandruff or another scalp concern, maintaining the proper pH balance is an important part of healthy hair and scalp care.

Using a properly formulated, pH-balanced shampoo can help support the natural balance of the hair and scalp while reducing the effects of excessive dryness or oiliness caused by harsh cleansing.

Third: Hydration

Our third approach is hydration.

When we hydrate the hair and scalp, we help replenish moisture and conditioning ingredients that can be lost or altered during the shampooing process.

Hydrating conditioners may include ingredients such as natural keratin and amino acids, which can help improve the feel, strength and manageability of the hair.

These three approaches, when used consistently and appropriately, can help support healthier-looking, stronger and shinier hair.

Because some people naturally produce more oil than others, moisturizers are not always necessary for every hair or scalp type. The key is understanding what your individual hair and scalp need.
