Beautiful, healthy hair starts long before you sit in a stylist’s chair. According to veteran hair care professional Tony Cozart, what’s happening inside your body often shows up in your hair and scalp.
Many common health conditions can affect hair growth and overall scalp health. High blood pressure, diabetes, endometriosis, autoimmune disorders, hormonal imbalances and chronic stress can all contribute to hair thinning, excessive shedding, breakage or a dry, flaky scalp. Low iron levels and vitamin D deficiencies may also play a role.
The good news, Cozart says, is that there are steps people can take to support healthier hair from the inside out.
“I recommend prenatal vitamins to many of my clients as a way to help support the body when it may be lacking important nutrients,” Cozart said. “Even healthy adults over the age of 30 can benefit from making sure they’re getting the vitamins their bodies need.”
Cozart prefers prenatal vitamins in soft gel form, explaining that liquid-filled capsules are often easier for the body to absorb than traditional solid tablets. He also recommends taking them at night.
“Your body does much of its healing and repair while you sleep,” he said. “Taking your vitamins before bed may help your body better absorb the nutrients they provide.”
While vitamins can support overall wellness, Cozart encourages anyone experiencing significant hair loss or sudden changes in their hair or scalp to consult a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
Healthy hair begins with a healthy body, and understanding what your body needs is one of the first steps toward achieving stronger, healthier hair.
