Laughter, coloring pages and the sound of excited voices filled the Magee Library last Saturday as families gathered for the Read and Rise Literacy Event. Parents, grandparents and children came together for a morning that celebrated reading, creativity and community connection.
The day began with children decorating book covers and making their own bookmarks during craft time. Afterward, Ophelia Brown shared her book, I Can Learn, I Just Learn Differently, with the young readers in attendance. Her book is available on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/4bZ34HU
Children then enjoyed snacks before receiving 15 free books from Katina’s Klassroom and Mississippi Humanities. The books carried messages of love, kindness, emotional growth, respect and celebrating the many ways children learn.
As a special surprise, Entergy provided blankets for the children to take home and use while reading their new books.
The next Read and Rise event will be held this Saturday at the Magee Library and will feature guest artist Elisha Spencer, author of The Pumpkin Patch.
