Beyond the Gradebook: Strengthening Mental Health and Emotional Growth in Mississippi Schools

By: Dr. Carla Kirkland

Academic success in Mississippi is often measured by scores and statistics. At The Kirkland Group, we recognize that a child’s ability to solve a math problem or analyze a text is deeply rooted in their emotional well-being.

To truly thrive in a K–12 environment, students must feel safe, supported, and emotionally resilient.

As we navigate the complexities of modern education, the focus on Social and Emotional Development (SED) has never been more vital.

The Foundation of Social-Emotional Learning

Social-emotional learning (SEL) isn’t just a buzzword. It’s a set of tools that help students manage emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, and make responsible decisions. When a child learns to regulate frustration during a difficult test, they’re not simply passing a grade—they’re building life skills that carry into adulthood.

Strategies for the Home and Classroom

As a parent, you are your child’s first “emotional coach.” You can strengthen their mental health by:

• Naming the emotion. Encourage your child to move beyond “I’m okay” or “I’m mad.” Use specific language like “I feel overwhelmed” or “I feel excluded.”

• The “Reset” routine. Create a space at home for calm, “cool-down” moments. Much like the “Safe Seats” we recommend in many of our partner districts, this is a non-punitive space to breathe and regroup.

• Modeling resilience. Let your child see you handle stress in healthy ways. Discussing your own problem-solving process helps them understand that challenges are a part of life—not a sign of failure.

How The Kirkland Group Assists

At The Kirkland Group, our mission extends beyond instructional coaching. We specialize in helping Mississippi school districts embed SEL into the fabric of the school day. We support districts through:

1. Teacher Coaching: Training educators to recognize the signs of mental health struggles and provide trauma-informed instruction that keeps students engaged rather than withdrawn.

2. Climate and Culture Support: Partnering with administrators to cultivate “high-trust” environments where students feel they belong—a key deterrent to behavioral challenges.

3. Data-Driven Interventions: Using climate surveys and behavioral data to identify students who need extra support before they reach a crisis point.

Mississippi Mental Health Resources

No parent should navigate these challenges alone. Mississippi offers several resources to support families:

• MDE Social Emotional Learning Standards: Explore Mississippi’s benchmarks for emotional and social growth by grade level.

• Mississippi Department of Mental Health (DMH): Access regional “Lakeside” mobile crisis units and family support services.

• National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Mississippi: Find support groups and education for families managing mental health challenges.

A Holistic Partnership

Strengthening our students requires a whole-community approach. When the support your child receives at home aligns with the strategies and professional development The Kirkland Group provides in schools, we create a safety net that ensures no student falls through the cracks. When our children are emotionally strong, their potential for academic greatness is limitless.
