Banner Day for Mississippi Baseball: Bulldogs, Rebels both reach Super Regionals

By The People’s Paper MS

Sunday was a banner day for baseball in the Magnolia State as both the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Ole Miss Rebels punched their tickets to super regionals.

Mississippi State went 3-0 in the Starkville regional, beating Louisiana-Lafayette 19-5 Sunday night at Dudy Noble Field. Over 800 miles away, Ole Miss beat Arizona State 5-4 to win the regional in Lincoln, Nebraska.

It’s just the fourth time that Mississippi State and Ole Miss advanced to the super regionals in the same season. They also did it in 2007, 2019 and 2021. Mississippi State went on to win the College World Series in 2021. Ole Miss won the College World Series the following year.

Both schools are in a super regional for the first time since their championship seasons.

The Bulldogs and Rebels now advance to the best-of-three super regional series, where they’ll fight for a spot in the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

Mississippi State will travel to face the University of Georgia in the Athens super regional in a series pitting two Bulldogs against each other. Mississippi State and Georgia have played four times this season (three times in the regular season and once in the SEC Tournament). Georgia won all four games.

Ole Miss, meanwhile, is waiting to find out their opponent. The Rebels will play the winner of the Auburn regional, which will be decided Monday afternoon. Auburn plays the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee for the regional championship. If Auburn wins, Ole Miss will travel to Auburn for the super regional. If the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee wins, Ole Miss would host the super regional in Oxford.

The eight super regional series will be played  this weekend at eight different sites.

The winners advance to the College World Series, which will be held June 12- June 22 at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.
Mississippi State is seeking its 13th trip to the College World Series. Ole Miss is looking to make its seventh trip to Omaha. The two schools have never made it to the College World Series in the same season.

Two teams. One goal. Omaha awaits.
