What an Armed Citizen Should Do in a Self Defense or Active Shooter Situation

By Denis J. Borges

I want to talk about something I hope none of us ever have to face, but it is still important to know what to do if it happens.

If you carry a firearm, you need to understand that it comes with a great deal of responsibility. Carrying a gun does not mean you should involve yourself in every argument or dangerous situation. If you can safely avoid trouble and leave, do it. There is nothing weak about walking away.

In a self defense situation, you must reasonably believe that you or another person is facing an immediate threat of death or serious bodily harm. Every situation is different, and the facts will always matter.

If you are forced to defend yourself, your goal is to stop the threat. Once the threat has ended, the use of force must stop.

Call 911 as soon as it is safe to do so. Tell the dispatcher where you are, provide a description of yourself, and let them know you are the victim. Follow their instructions.

When officers arrive, remember they may not know who the suspect is. Keep your hands visible and follow every command. Never walk toward officers with a firearm in your hand. If it is safe to do so, reholster your firearm or place it on the ground before officers make contact with you.

During an active shooter situation, your first priority should be getting yourself and your family away from the danger. If you can safely leave, leave. Do not stay behind to record videos or try to see what is happening.

If you cannot get out, find a secure place to hide. Lock or barricade the door if possible, silence your phone, remain quiet, and stay out of sight.

If you are faced with an immediate threat and there is no safe way to escape, you may have to defend yourself or another innocent person. Your actions should be focused solely on stopping the immediate threat.

Do not go looking for the shooter. Do not chase anyone who is running away. Your responsibility is to protect yourself and those around you, not to pursue someone who is fleeing.

Once law enforcement arrives, keep your hands empty and visible. Listen carefully and follow instructions immediately. Officers are entering a dangerous and confusing scene, and they may not know who everyone is.

Here are a few important reminders:

• Know how to safely use and securely store your firearm.

• Train regularly.

• Keep firearms away from children and anyone who should not have access to them.

• Stay aware of your surroundings.

• Have an emergency plan with your family for school, church, work, shopping centers, and other public places.

Most importantly, do not look for trouble. A firearm should only be used to protect innocent life when there is no other safe option.

I hope none of us ever finds ourselves in this type of situation. However, being prepared, staying calm, and making sound decisions can save lives.

Stay safe, and continue looking out for one another.

This information is provided for general safety purposes only and is not legal advice. Every incident is different, and the facts of each case will determine whether the use of force was legally justified.
