The community will gather March 20–22, 2026, to celebrate the extraordinary life of Dr. John M. Perkins, who passed away peacefully on March 13 at the age of 95. Known for his unwavering faith, commitment to justice, and heart for reconciliation, Dr. Perkins left a legacy that has touched countless lives in Mississippi, across the nation, and around the world.

Dr. Perkins and his beloved wife, Vera Mae, shared 74 years of marriage and raised eight children together. Family, friends, and neighbors remember him as a man whose courage and compassion inspired others to live boldly for justice, love, and community.

“The life my father lived showed us what it truly means to serve others,” said one of his children. “He believed that faith without action was incomplete, and he spent every day teaching us to care for people, stand for justice, and work toward reconciliation.”

Homegoing Weekend Schedule:

• Friday, March 20: Lie in State at Jackson City Hall, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Wake at New Horizon Church International, 5–7 p.m.

• Saturday, March 21: Homegoing Celebration at 11 a.m., New Horizon Church International, 1750 Bobby Rush Blvd., Jackson. Repast and tributes to follow.

• Sunday, March 22: Interment at Oak Ridge M.B. Church Cemetery, 11 a.m., New Hebron, MS.

Police motorcades will accompany key events, honoring Dr. Perkins’ impact on the community and beyond.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the John & Vera Mae Perkins Foundation, helping continue his lifelong mission of faith, justice, and reconciliation. The Homegoing Celebration will also be live-streamed on YouTube for those unable to attend.

Dr. Perkins’ work challenged people to act with courage and love, to bridge divides, and to live with integrity. His legacy is not only remembered but lived on through those he inspired—family, friends, and communities committed to justice and reconciliation.
