Small Town Accountability

By Chief Denis J. Borges

In a small town, everybody knows everybody.

That is one of the best parts about living here. We see each other at the grocery store, at church, at ball games, and school events. We know families. We know history. We know stories. That sense of connection is what makes a town like Magee special.

But there is another side to that reality.

Small town policing is not easier. In many ways, it is harder.

In a larger city, an officer can make an arrest and never cross paths with that person again. Here, you may arrest someone you went to school with. You may stop someone whose parents you know. You may deal with someone you have known your entire life. That is real. That is small town law enforcement.

The badge does not erase relationships. It demands that we rise above them.

Accountability in a small town means the law applies to everyone. Not just the outsider driving through on Highway 49. Not just the person nobody recognizes. Everyone. Friendship does not override responsibility. Family ties do not cancel consequences. Emotions do not rewrite the law.

That does not mean we lack compassion. It means we have standards.

If we bend the rules for one person because we know them, we weaken the trust of everyone else. Integrity only works when it is consistent. If the standard changes depending on the last name, then it is not a standard at all.

As Chief, I have to make decisions that are not always comfortable. Sometimes those decisions involve people I know. Sometimes they involve people I respect. Leadership is not about comfort. It is about doing what is right, even when it costs you personally.

I was not handed anything in life. I worked my way up, and I understand what it means to earn trust. That is why integrity matters to me. It is not a slogan. It is a responsibility.

I tell my officers the same thing I tell myself. We enforce the law based on facts. Not rumors. Not pressure. Not politics. Facts.

Small towns are built on relationships. They are sustained by integrity.

And integrity means the standard does not change depending on who you are.
