Several years ago, a lady in our church said, “We don’t have any ladies that pray the way the older ladies used to pray.” My response, with a smile, was, “You are that older lady now.” I went on to tell her that as the older ladies have gone on, it’s now her season. She is the lady people are referring to as a mother of the church. It is part of her responsibility to teach, train, and be an example to the younger women and girls.
After several minutes of conversation, she realized that there had been a drastic change in our church over the last three to four years and that she was now one of the older women.
Currently at Saint John Missionary Baptist Church, we are in a series titled “Where Are The Women?” In Titus 2:3 (NLT), the apostle Paul tells Titus to teach the older women to live in a way that honors God. The older women needed to be taught so they could train the younger women how to live (Titus 2:4–5, NLT). Younger ladies and girls are often criticized in society today when some things are not necessarily their fault.
As with any of us, if we aren’t taught certain things, we will not know them until we are taught or until we have a “lightbulb moment” or situation.
Paul begins this chapter in verse one by telling Titus to promote the kind of living that reflects wholesome teaching. He starts with the men (as noted in the last three articles, “Where Are The Men?”) and then goes on to the women.
Younger ladies should be able to look at older ladies and see a reflection of who they need to be.
Ladies, when a younger lady or girl looks at you, what do they see? Do they see a godly influence or a worldly influence?
Women, you need to be aware that youngsters are watching you, even when you think they aren’t. They are listening to you. What are they hearing you say?
Ephesians 4:29 (NLT) says, “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”
Ladies, make sure that when a younger lady sees you, she sees a positive example of what a lady should be.
Until next week, be intentional about living in a way that honors God so that when youngsters look at you, they will have an example of how they should live.
