This year’s matchup featured two teams that delivered strong performances throughout the regular season and postseason. The New England Patriots entered the game amid a youth movement in the post–Tom Brady era, led by quarterback Drake Maye, head coach Mike Vrabel, and a promising rookie draft class. They faced off against the Seattle Seahawks, a team confident in having one of the league’s top defenses.

For Seattle, the biggest question mark was quarterback play. Free-agent acquisition and NFL journeyman Sam Darnold, known for strong regular-season performances but inconsistent postseason results, stood as the potential X-factor. The Seahawks knew they had taken a calculated risk, and fans anticipated a more competitive showing between the two teams. Still, nothing tops the energy and spectacle of the Super Bowl atmosphere.

This week’s Mississippi Spotlight features Seattle Seahawks offensive tackle Charles Cross. At just 25 years old, Cross is a native of Laurel, Mississippi, and a graduate of Laurel High School—now officially a Super Bowl Champion.

Cross’s football journey includes a standout college career at Mississippi State University (Hail State!). Drafted ninth overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, Cross earned numerous accolades during his time with the Bulldogs, including selection to the SEC All-Freshman Team after securing a starting role early in his collegiate career. After three strong seasons at Mississippi State, combined with an impressive NFL Draft Combine and All-American Bowl showing, Cross significantly boosted his draft stock, solidifying himself as a top-10 selection.

Seattle Seahawks fans have had plenty to celebrate. Since being drafted, Cross has started 62 games at offensive tackle, including all 17 games during his rookie season, quickly establishing himself as one of the league’s top young linemen. After four years of consistent, high-level play, the Seahawks exercised his fifth-year option and later signed Cross to a four-year extension worth $104.4 million, with $75 million guaranteed.

It’s clear the Seahawks are pleased with the Mississippi native. Cross has been a cornerstone of the offensive line and a major contributor to the team’s success, helping anchor the unit that protected Sam Darnold en route to a Super Bowl victory. With many productive years still ahead, Mississippians can expect Cross to continue representing the state with pride on the NFL’s biggest stage.

With the 2025–2026 season officially complete, NFL fans now face nine months of anticipation before kickoff returns. Between free agency, the new league year, draft hype, and coaches settling into new roles, there’s still plenty to look forward to.

Buckle up! We’re in for a fun offseason.
