Mississippi has produced some remarkable basketball talent, and Monta’ Ellis is among the players who have made their mark on the national stage. Now, the former NBA standout is being recognized for more than his accomplishments on the court.

Ellis received the Key to the City of Jackson, and Oct. 9 was recognized as Monta Ellis Day in the capital city. The honors celebrate his basketball career, his return to Mississippi and his efforts to give back to the next generation.

As a Mississippi basketball fan, I know that fans across the state often look beyond state lines when choosing their NBA teams. With no NBA franchise in Mississippi, loyalties range from the New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies to teams such as the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets and Milwaukee Bucks.

As a Bucks fan, I remember when Milwaukee acquired Ellis for the 2012-13 season. His time with the team was one chapter in a professional career that spanned more than a decade.

But Ellis’ story extends beyond his years in the NBA.

He has become a familiar name in Mississippi basketball, joining a group of players with state ties who have reached the professional level. His career has also given him a platform to encourage young athletes to pursue their goals.

Ellis has continued investing in Mississippi through basketball camps, community involvement and efforts connected to the Monta Ellis 8 Foundation. His work has included donating school supplies and supporting young people.

He has also taken on a role with Alcorn State University men’s basketball, connecting his professional experience with the development of future players.

Jackson’s recognition highlights the importance of returning home and using success to make a difference in the lives of others.

Mayor John Horhn praised Ellis as an example for young people, emphasizing the importance of discipline, hard work and pursuing their dreams.

Ellis expressed appreciation for the opportunity to return to Mississippi and contribute to his home state.

“I’m just appreciative to be able to come back home and make a difference,” Ellis said.

For young Mississippians who dream of playing basketball at the highest level, Ellis’ journey offers a reminder that achievement can extend beyond personal success. Giving back, encouraging others and investing in the next generation can become part of a lasting legacy.

Receiving the Key to the City of Jackson recognizes Ellis’ accomplishments, but his continued connection to Mississippi may prove just as meaningful.

His story is about more than basketball. It is about coming home and making a difference.
