Simpson County Deputy Shot in Foot During Active Standoff in Mendenhall, Sheriff Confirms

By The People’s Paper MS Staff

MENDENHALL — A Simpson County deputy was shot in the foot during an active standoff Wednesday afternoon in Mendenhall, but is expected to be okay, according to Sheriff Paul Mullins.

“He did, but he’s fine,” Mullins told The People’s Paper MS.

Sheriff Mullins said deputies responded to a welfare concern on W.L. Blair Circle when they arrived at a residence with an open front door. As deputies approached, a suspect inside the home opened fire.

The deputy was struck in the foot during the exchange of gunfire. The injury was not life-threatening, and the deputy remained on scene following the incident.

Mullins said the suspect is believed to be alone inside the residence and continues to fire shots, prompting an ongoing law enforcement response.

Multiple agencies remain on scene as authorities work to contain the situation and bring it to a resolution.

Residents in the area have been urged to avoid the location while the standoff continues.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
