What to Know About Power Outages, Frozen Pipes, and Utility Crews

By K. Monroe Carter

Cold weather brings more than slick roads. It can also place added strain on power lines, water systems, and home plumbing across Mississippi.

Ice accumulation and strong winds increase the risk of temporary power outages. Residents are encouraged to take simple precautions, including:

  • Keeping phones and backup batteries charged
  • Using generators safely and outdoors only
  • Never using grills, ovens, or open flames indoors for heat

If power is lost, residents should report the outage directly to their utility provider rather than assuming crews are already aware.

Southern Pine Electric Director of Community Development Dr. Darnell Moffett said crews are closely monitoring the approaching winter system.

“We are monitoring the upcoming winter weather event that may affect our service area this weekend,” Moffett said. “While forecasts can and do change, we want to ensure that everyone is aware and prepared. Given some uncertainty about this weather system, we ask that our members take necessary precautions as outlined by our CEO in a video on our social media platforms.”

Protecting Pipes During Extreme Cold

Freezing temperatures can cause pipes to burst, leading to costly repairs and water damage. To reduce the risk, residents should:

  • Allow faucets to drip slightly during extreme cold
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks to circulate warm air
  • Wrap or insulate exposed pipes when possible

If pipes freeze, homeowners are advised not to use open flames to thaw them and to contact a licensed professional.

Travel Safety a Major Concern

Driving on icy roads remains one of the most serious risks during winter weather, according to Mendenhall Police Chief James Walker.

“Please do not drive in this weather unless you absolutely have to,” Walker said. “Slow down and use your brakes as little as possible. Give the car in front of you plenty of distance. If you must go out, make sure you have a full tank of fuel and know your location. It may take officers some time to reach you, so please be safe.”

Utility Crews Working Under Tough Conditions

Utility crews often work extended hours in dangerous conditions during winter events. Road closures, bucket trucks, and repair delays may be unavoidable, but crews are responding as quickly and safely as weather conditions allow.

“As the forecast becomes clearer, we will share updates,” Moffett added.

Winter weather in Mississippi may be inconvenient, but preparation, patience, and staying informed can help reduce disruptions and keep communities resilient.
