More Than a Coach: The Lasting Impact of James H. Turner – Faith, Discipline, and Impact

By Guest Writer Katina Rankin

Coach James H. Turner lived a life that measured success not in wins or losses, but in how he shaped young people, uplifted his community, and lived out his faith beyond the basketball court.

Born July 7, 1943, and called home April 5, 2026, Coach Turner leaves a legacy that reaches far beyond any gym.

Coach Turner served as more than a mentor to athletes. He became a steady presence in the lives of students, parents, and neighbors. Those who knew him remember a man who arrived early, stayed late, and never missed a moment to teach or encourage. Whether offering praise for effort or guidance during difficult times, he showed up with intention.

His commitment extended beyond athletics. He invested in his church, his family, and his community, always seeking ways to help others grow in strength and character.

Rev. Clint Perkins, who grew up as best friends with Coach Turner’s oldest son, Andy, remembers Coach Turner saying, “Young men need to prioritize things, including rest. At the time, it probably sounded crazy, but he was 100% correct. Now at 57, I realize taking care of yourself is one of the most important lessons he taught.”

Former players often recall his balance of discipline and compassion. They say he taught fundamentals, but more importantly, he instilled respect and integrity. Many say his steady belief in them, especially in moments of doubt, made a lasting difference.

“He loved coaching and watching his players grow into successful men and women beyond basketball,” said Rev. Dolphus Weary. “He loved what he did and did it with all his heart. He was a strong motivator.”

For decades, Coach Turner remained rooted in Mendenhall and the surrounding area. People knew him not only for his work in sports, but for his faithful presence in church and family life. His connection to Mendenhall Bible Church reflected a lifelong commitment to faith.

Mendenhall community neighbor Marilyn Williams remembers Coach Turner as “hardworking, strict but fair. He was an encouraging man of God. Coach loved my soup.”

Family and friends will gather to honor his life with visitation on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 3 to 7 pm, and a Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 11 at 11 am. Both will be at Mendenhall Bible Church. Burial will follow at Rosehill Cemetery.

The Turner and Womack families expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love and support on social media. Their words reflect a truth the community already knows.

Coach Turner touched countless lives. His impact lives not in headlines or trophies, but in the people who felt seen, guided, and believed in … because he chose to show up.

Coach James H. Turner’s story reflects the heart of many Mississippi communities. He stayed, he served, and he poured into the next generation with quiet humility.

His life reminds us that greatness often looks like consistency, faith, and a willingness to invest in others.

Service. Sacrifice. Belief in the potential of every young person.
