Breaking Barriers: Dr. Sylvanus P. Weathersby, Mississippi’s First Black Veterinarian

By The People’s Paper MS

In the heart of Simpson County lies a story of brilliance, perseverance, and quiet revolution. Long before representation in professional fields became a talking point, Dr. Sylvanus P. Weathersby had already carved his place in Mississippi history. Dr. Weathersby became the first Black veterinarian licensed to practice in the state.

Born the son of Foster Weathersby, a formerly enslaved man, Dr. Weathersby’s life embodied the progress of a generation that refused to be confined by circumstance. From humble roots in Simpson County, he rose to a position of profound respect, serving communities across D’Lo, Mendenhall, Braxton, and even into parts of Rankin County.

Neighbors recall that Dr. Weathersby’s care extended across racial lines, at a time when segregation drew sharp boundaries elsewhere. He treated the farm animals that sustained local families’ livelihoods: cows, horses, and dogs alike with the same steady hand and compassionate heart.  His practice wasn’t just a business. It was a community lifeline that bridged divides through service and skill.

His pioneering work didn’t end with him. Dr. Weathersby’s legacy lived on through his sons, Dr. Sylvanus P. Weathersby Jr. and Dr. Milton Weathersby.  Both followed in his footsteps, continuing the family tradition of veterinary medicine. Together, the Weathersbys represented a lineage of excellence, education, and community commitment rarely seen in rural Mississippi during their time.

Today, Dr. Weathersby’s contributions remain an inspiring reminder that greatness often begins in small towns … in barns, pastures, and family stories passed quietly from one generation to the next.

His life’s work helped open doors for future Black professionals in Mississippi and beyond, cementing his place among the state’s most significant pioneers.

As we celebrate Black History Month and Simpson County’s local heritage, remembering figures like Dr. Sylvanus P. Weathersby keeps that history alive. It’s a testament to how courage, education, and compassion can change a community forever.
